Reuben Paterson was born in Auckland in 1973, and belongs to Ngati Rangitihi, of the Te Arawa waka, and Ngai Tuhoe. In 1997 he graduated from Elam school of fine arts, University of Auckland, and was awarded the Moet and Chandon Fellowship to Avize, France as the second Maori artist and youngest recipient of this prestigious award. He then spent two years travelling in Europe, and living in England. While in England he taught Maori art programmes to children in primary schools. In 2000 he returned to New Zealand, and continued to exhibit both nationally and internationally. Now a full-time artist living in Greece, he has exhibited throughout New Zealand and Australia, and has work in several major public collections. In 2005 he is representing New Zealand in Brisbane and at the prestigious International Art Biennial in Prague.
